Are homework necessary?

I just read an article and I thought that is was really interesting. It talks about an Italian primary teacher that sent a list with some “homework” for his students to do in the summer holidays. But what makes this homework different to all the homework we’ve done throughout our lives is that they are not about maths, language or science, they consist in enjoying the summer and living fully. Some of the activities from the list of 15 homework he elaborate are to walk alone at the seashore, avoid people who make one feel negative and empty, to dance "without feeling embarrassed" or dream of how life can be.

As we talk in our presentation about theming, we think that homework is a very important point in our educational system that should be changed because as we think that now education has to change the objectives and try to prepare students for real life in all aspects, such as moral or emotionally, instead of making the memorize and repeat what other people said ages a go. And that’s why we think that this teacher has made the right decision in not sending the students any “real homework”, because it’s very important that the children enjoy their lives and live new experiences, as we think that it’s the best way of learning.

I also read an interview not too long ago from Francesco Tonucci, and italian pedagogue, and his point of view about homework is quite similar to mine so I will quote some of his answers related with homework: "Los deberes son una equivocación pedagógica y un abuso. Nunca consiguen el resultado que la escuela presume. Deberían ser una ayuda para los más débiles pero estos no son tan capaces de acometerlos, y además en casa a menudo no encuentran ayuda, pues pertenecen a familias de bajo nivel social y cultural. Así, quienes más aprovechan los deberes son los que menos los necesitan: aquellos que tienen familias que les pueden ayudar. La Convención habla del derecho a la escuela y al juego. ¡Deberían ser reconocidos como dos con el mismo peso! Si la escuela ocupa la mitad del día, la otra mitad no debería ser suya, sino de los niños.”… and he also has a positive view about children games… “La escuela debería estar sumamente interesada en que los niños jueguen. Las experiencias pueden y deben ser comunicadas en el colegio. Por eso yo tengo una pelea desde hace muchos años contra los deberes de casa. La escuela debería pedir a los niños: «Por favor, debéis jugar para poder traer mañana experiencias». En esto hay que comprometer también a las familias. A menudo crean para los niños agendas más apretadas que las de los mayores.” (La Voz de Galicia, Educación, 12 de abril de 2015)
